Adding new cross member to an old trailer
I own a 1980 classic Boston Whaler Newport 17 that is nicely restored. I trailer it long distances and I pay a lot of attention to my aluminum trailer. The number 1 cross member was poorly designed and had a tendency to hit on steep driveways. It finally needed to be replaced.
I bought the 3x3 aluminum cross member and spent a lot of time fitting it to the smaller trailer. I bolted in place with 1/2 inch, stainless bolts. It is rock solid now and I gained 6 inches in ground clearance. I added a skid plate and my boat should ride a lot more stable. I give this cross member 4 stars only because I have not loaded the boat and did a road test. I'm sure it will deliver a 5 star performance. If you have to replace a cross member, I recommend this one.
